For its 2025 annual production, Ensemble La Sestina will dedicate a complete program to the composer Pierre Certon.
Pierre Certon (c. 1510/1515 – 1572), along with Clément Janequin and Claudin de Sermisy, is one of the leading figures of the first generation of composers active in the new French polyphonic song of the 16th century. In 1570, he published an impressive collection of Meslanges , a significant milestone in the history of French song. The program will feature a variety of pieces, from lighthearted to melancholic and erotic, including a drinking song! For this performance, the ensemble will consist of eight singers performing a cappella .

Certon's Miscellany , an anthology of Renaissance music
Pierre Certon's Meslanges constitute a unique musical collection of the Renaissance. First and foremost, they represent the culmination of a long career as a composer in Paris within the circles of power. Certon's name appears in 1529, when he became a clerk at Notre Dame. Three years later, he was attached to the Sainte-Chapelle, an institution where he became master of the choirboys in 1536. During this period, Certon distinguished himself, along with Clément Janequin and Claudin de Sermisy, as one of the leading exponents of the polyphonic French chanson, also known as Parisian chanson.
It was no less than forty years later, in 1570, that Nicolas Du Chemin published his Meslanges in Paris. Certon is referred to here as Composer of Music to the King's Chapel. The collection is also unique because, unlike the miscellanies of other musicians, it contains almost exclusively newly published works, and in considerable number: 96 pieces!
The songs in this collection, however, possess a retrospective character, insofar as they are based on pre-existing 16th-century songs. The models are borrowed from Certon himself, Sermisy and Janequin, lesser-known French musicians, as well as Franco-Flemish composers, such as Josquin Desprez, Jean Richafort, and Jacques Arcadelt. Certon essentially recomposes new pieces by appropriating the melodic elements of these models and recombining them in countless ways.
We are far removed here from the aesthetic of originality so dear to the 19th century… Certon fully embraces the Renaissance aesthetic of imitation/homage, which encouraged musicians to appropriate pre-existing musical material in order to both pay homage to the great composers and surpass their achievements. From this perspective, it is not surprising that Certon wrote pieces for 5 to 8 voices, based on models for 3 or 4 voices!
Only one copy of the Meslanges survives today, in the Uppsala University Library. This edition consists of six separate parts (six independent notebooks). However, one of these parts, the quintus, is lost… The missing voice must therefore be completed. This task will be undertaken by Marc Busnel, a singer with the ensemble and a specialist in the reconstruction of Renaissance polyphonic works.

Cet été 2025, l’Ensemble La Sestina se produira à nouveau dans le cadre du Festival Les Jardins Musicaux, perpétuant une collaboration pérenne depuis plusieurs années avec cette institution musicale neuchâteloise.

Le volet "Bal(l)ades" des Jardins Musicaux conjugue découvertes et concerts dans des lieux insolites du patrimoine régional, visant à faire voyager, penser, rêver. L'Ensemble La Sestina, composé de douze chanteuses et chanteurs et de leur chef Adriano Giardina, fera résonner les murs de l'Ancienne usine de pâte à bois de Rondchâtel (canton de Berne).

... Et une musique qui ne l'est pas moins.
Carlo Gesualdo, prince de Venosa, jouit d’une célébrité pour le moins douteuse : il fit assassiner son épouse qu’il soupçonnait d’infidélité. Mais il est aussi l’auteur d’une musique dont les audaces sidèrent encore quatre siècles plus tard et des Répons qui représentent son testament et achèvement ultime. Le texte retrace les derniers moments de la vie de Jésus, depuis la trahison de Judas lors de la nuit au mont des Oliviers, jusqu’à la crucifixion.

Contrairement à la grande majorité des compositeurs de son époque, Gesualdo n’avait pas à répondre à une commande extérieure pour des raisons financières et les Répons sont le résultat d’un acte créateur entièrement "gratuit". Alors que la révolution baroque est en route, le langage musical de Gesualdo (sombre et underground) fait figure d’exception : le compositeur renonce à l’opportunité de la basse continue, synonyme de modernité et de liberté. Son écriture contrainte et archaïque, mais surtout singulière, fascine musicologues, musiciens et grand public depuis la redécouverte de son œuvre dans les années 1950.​​​
